A Brief Encounter is the sixth and final episode of Series 3 and was broadcasted on Monday 28th January 2013. It was followed by the 2014 finale special in two parts; I Do But Who? and The Final Curtain.

Synopsis[]

Miranda makes a big life decision - she's getting away, going traveling. She's packed her bags, she's leaving, this time for real. Stevie is devastated and Penny is too wrapped up in renewing her wedding vows to notice. There's only Gary to stop her going, but how does he really feel?

Plot[]

Miranda has taken in a litter of kittens as a sop after Gary told her he just wanted to stay friends after her declaration of love in the previous episode.

Penny announces that she and Charles are renewing their vows, much to Miranda's horror. Tilly, meanwhile returns from Cyprus with a new boyfriend in tow, "Dreamboat" Charlie, their coming together described as "In Cyprus. Sambucco. Donkey. Rumpy de pumpy!"

Miranda decides to go to Morocco after meeting Helena, a free spirited dress designer. She initially stays at the Hamilton Lodge in preparation for leaving, having put the flat on the market. She is stopped by airport security, however, and a search of her bag turns up a stowaway kitten in her case. She misses her flight.

Back at home, Miranda, with Stevie's help picks Wick in northern Scotland, as her new destination - she can go by train and there is no language issue. She unknowingly gets on the wrong train, however, and as Gary rushes to the station to stop her from leaving, she notices the train to Wick pulling out, and rushes to try and make it, running into Gary on the platform.  She guesses that Stevie had told him she was leaving and he responded that he had come straight away. The pair then run from 'youths' who objected to Miranda cutting the wire to a set of earbuds, "Oh, Miranda, what have you done now?"

Briefkiss

Returning to her flat, Gary sits her down to explain that although he knows he should have let her go, he could not, "I realized that I can't let you go, 'cause it's always been you. No one can match up to you," and he finally kisses her properly. He has to then leave for the reception for Penny and Charles at the restaurant, but runs back to kiss Miranda again, when they are interrupted by the estate agent who is showing the flat. Miranda informs them the flat is no longer for sale, even as Gary embraces her.

He then must leave for the restaurant, and sets up for Penny's reception. Penny however, arrives with Mike in tow and he proposes to Miranda. Miranda is stunned and Gary asks her what she says to that. She asks Gary what he says. He then gets down on one knee and proposes as well.

Quotes[]

Gary: Miranda, please don't go away. I can't imagine you not being around, and I know I said just friends, but...
Miranda: But what?
Gary: But....
Miranda: You can't say any more, Gary. You don't have a but. I mean, you have a physical butt. Your physical butt is second to none. But you'll never man up for your emotional but.

---

Gary: I needed to... Need to man up. I'm just sorry it's taken me so long. So...When Stevie told me that you were leaving, I knew what I had to do. I had to let you go. But....
Miranda: There's a but?
Gary: Yeah, I'm manning up for my but. Don't! But... I realised, I can't let you go, 'cause it's...it's always been you.
Miranda: Nice but.
