Chris is a casual friend of Gary's, and by extension, Miranda.

Gary tells Miranda that Chris and his friend Alison once made an agreement to be each other's safety spouse, and marry at 40 if they hadn't found anyone, "They were friends at university, and they said they'd get married if they were still single at 40....He took her off to Paris last year and proposed....it works so you allow time to meet the one. But if something happens...then you don't ignore it. If there's a "moment", then clearly the rules are you go to Paris and get engaged." They married off screen between series 1 and series 2.

During the second series, Alison is pregnant, and the couple tells Gary that they want him as godfather, and tell Miranda that she is "in the running" for godmother. When Gary puts in a good word for Miranda, they select her as godmother, but when they reveal that Miranda would also be Alison's birthing partner, and be responsible for burying the placenta, Miranda freaks out, and plots to be banned from god-motherhood by doing something "intrinsically evil." When Miranda indicates her irritation with Chris and his wife, Gary admonishes her, "They're very sweet and they really like you."

In I Do But To Who? Chris and Alison are elements to Gary's freaking out at his own engagement party after he witnesses them as less than their usually cooing selves, "All that lovey dovey talk is obviously covering something."
