Date is the first episode of the first season and thereby the series premiere of the BBC's Miranda. It was broadcast on BBC One on 9th November 2009.

Summary[]

Miranda is 6 feet tall and is called "Sir" a bit too often. Her mother tries to find the right man for her, but Miranda isn't interested in matchmaking. But when her university pal, Gary, returns form his travels and takes a job as a chef in the restaurant next door to her Joke Shop, things begin to look up. When Gary asks Miranda out for a catch-up drink, she couldn't be more thrilled.

Plot[]

Miranda's mother has been trying to find her a husband and is appalled that Miranda has opened a joke shop with a recent windfall, hiring her best friend Stevie to manage it. Miranda is also thrilled to hear that her friend Gary is back from his travels.

At the shop, Stevie tells her there's a delivery of chocolate willies. Miranda suggests that they're almost like the real thing although Stevie doesn't believe so. She tells Stevie that she will be having a reunion lunch with "the girls" from her boarding school, when two delivery men walk in. One of them asks Miranda to sign while the other drops off boxes and calls her "sir" in the process, this annoys Miranda as the delivery man still thought it to be correct even when he looked at her.

Penny walks in and mentions that Miranda's cousin is still available, leaving Miranda to once again declare that she won't marry her cousin. When Stevie opens the boxes, she finds them to be filled with baby toys and clothes. Miranda leaves Stevie to sort it, and heads for her lunch with the girls.

Arriving at the cafe, Gary spots Miranda and greets her enthusiastically. Miranda tells him that her shop is next door. In an attempt to impress him, she begins to lie about being a gymnast.

After Gary goes back to the kitchen, Miranda moves to the girls table. Tilly and Fanny call her "Queen Kong" and show her their engagement rings. They tell her that they are going to shop for wedding dresses tomorrow afternoon and ask Miranda to come with them, she is less than thrilled.

Back in the shop she tells Stevie that Gary works next door, and tells her about her attempts at impressing him. Stevie is on the phone, trying to call the company that has delivered the baby stuff, but she's been waiting on hold for an half an hour, forcing to listen to awful music. Gary enters, and asks if Miranda had gotten married yet, she ends up lying about a family that does not exist, but he knows that, and asks for confirmation that none of the tale had been true. He then asks if she wants to come the restaurant later to catch up. While attempting to leave, Stevie insists she tidy, and Miranda puts the boxes of baby products in Stevie's "personal space" and runs out.

Hoping to find a new outfit, she enters a shop, not knowing that it's a shop for cross dressers. The shop owner tells her that she has a fine figure and that he knows exactly what to do. Reappearing in a drag-queen gown, a customer in the Joke Shop tells her she could definitely 'pass', leaving her unsure as to what he means. Stevie sees her and immediately reacts by asking why she's dressed as a transvestite. At that point, Gary walks in. Embarrassed, Miranda tells him it's their new line and she's just trying it out, then goes upstairs to change, asking Gary to wait.

After having a nice chat at the restaurant, they head up to her flat, talking about how they don't understand why people they know seem so desperate to breed. When she opens the door, and see her flat is filled with baby stuff. Gary says it's late and hastily retreats.

The next day, Miranda tells Stevie she ruined her night as Gary came back to her flat, but Stevie blames her for putting the boxes in her personal space. Later that day, Miranda starts a conversation with Gary to try to explain the mishap. He apologises to her for not giving the opportunity to explain. She then leaves to see "the girls" for the shopping.

She enters the wedding dress shop and sees that Tilly and Fanny are already there, wearing dresses. The employee asks Miranda if she wants to try a dress and Miranda tells her that she is a size ten before admitting that she is, in fact, a size "ten-ty". Miranda walks out of the changing room, dressed in a terrible wedding dress just as Gary walks by and seeing her in the wedding dress, he starts running. Penny then walks by and faints at the sight of her in the dress. Miranda leaves in the wedding dress and runs after Gary, but he keeps running.
