Michael "Mike” Jackford is a local news reporter; he becomes Miranda's boyfriend in Series 3. He is a very kind and understanding man who finds Miranda inexplicable and fascinating, someone who got him out of his 'boring shell.'
Series 3[]
It Was Panning
Mike is first seen on a TV report, discussing the threats of obesity, whilst closing, Miranda is seen on a bench as the camera "pans" out for the ending. Later when Miranda sees Mike, and asks whether the news report included her as being obese, he assured he they would not do that, and they were simply panning, and that she was 'lovely.' Later in the episode, he is seen reporting on old age, with Penny being seen in the end as it 'pans' out.
What a Surprise
Mike is again seen when Miranda visits a nightclub. He says he is attending a colleagues party, Miranda is there 'on the pull' with Stevie and Tilly. Since neither really wants to be there, they go off together and spend the rest of the evening just talking. The next morning he appears in the shop and asks her out, telling her, 'I really fancy you.' After she is arrested during their second date, she thought things were over, but he appears at Stevie's party in the costume of a knight in armor, and he said he realized, "That was the real you in the club that night, wasn't it?" and then introduced himself to Gary as Miranda's boyfriend.
The Dinner Party
Mike and Miranda are still dating and Miranda is delighted to be in an adult relationship, but exhausted by trying to be the perfect girlfriend. When Mike tells her his father wants to meet her, she decides to host a dinner party for them. When Miranda then hurts her back, she sees an osteopath with whom she embarrasses herself - the doctor turns out to be Mike's dad. He is a judgemental humorless man who puts Penny's back up and further embarrasses Miranda. When Gary, Stevie, and Penny badmouth him privately but are heard over a baby monitor, he says he and Mike are leaving. Mike says he is not, that he's fallen in love with Miranda.
Je Regret Nothing
Miranda and Mike are still together, but as Penny has come to stay with her daughter while she recovers from a bad back, he has left town, "Mike accepted a training course to get away. I am at the plotting-her-death stage."
Three Little Words
Miranda discovers she cannot say 'I love you' to Mike when he says it to her. Normally, she would workshop with Stevie but as they have fallen, Miranda workshops with a Customer instead. When he asks her what makes her heart skip, what she loves, she says doughnuts, and he tells her, "You're not in love your boyfriend. It's only fair to split up with him." She collapses into her beanbag after this harsh judgement, "Oh, my lovely Mike!" Stevie moves in to return to her post as Miranda's confidant, and affirms "you love him but you're not in love with him." She got Miranda to see that she liked being with Mike, he was comfortable, but it was Gary who made her heart skip. It was determined she needed to find a way to break up with Mike so she could tell Gary how she felt. In the end, Mike tells her he's taken a job in Africa, and she encourages him to go.
A Brief Encounter
Shortly after Gary finally declares his feelings to Miranda and the two of them are together, Mike returns and shows up at the restaurant with a ring and a proposal for Miranda. Gary asks Miranda what she says to it, and she asks him what he says. After a moment's thought, he, too, proposes.
I Do But to to Who?
Picking up at the proposal, after a moment's panicked reflection, Miranda tells Mike that he's a good man, and that she loves him, but she wants to marry Gary. Resigned, Mike says these things usually work out as they should, accepting her choice gracefully.
